Freedom of information
I am a firm believer in freedom of information and of the right of the public to know what we do as their representatives and how their money is spent. I voted against the Freedom of Information Amendment Private Member's Bill that exempts Parliament from the list of public authorities that are covered by freedom of information in May 2007.

There may be a legitimate concern about the confidentiality of letters to and about our constituents and I agree that personal details must be kept private. However, the Bill went far further than this and amendments that would have tightened its scope
to simply cover this were defeated.I hope that the House of Lords will vote it down as it does Parliament's reputation no good at all.
