Civil Liberties and ID Cards

The test of someone who defends civil liberties is not when times are easy but when they are difficult and pressures increase to abandon them.

I have fought against the creation of ID Cards whenever governments have tried to bring them in. I opposed plans to detain people without charge and to weaken the right to a jury trial.

In the past few years I have voted against increasing state powers to snoop on the public, like Secret Courts and the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act that were brought in by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

I will continue to guard our civil liberties.
