I am delighted that Sadiq Khan has wisely decided to rule out public funding for the Garden Bridge. Although it was a nice idea, it was in the wrong location and its procurement process raised many questions about lack of competition.
As the projected costs grew and grew it became clear that the Bridge would be a white elephant and a liability for the taxpayer. I set out the case against in Parliament, and I am very pleased to have been vindicated by Margaret Hodge’s independent review and the decision of the Mayor.
