I believe that the UK has a responsibility to do its bit to support and protect child refugees on the Continent. I supported the so-called Dubs amendment last year to allow 3000 vulnerable unaccompanied minors into the country, and I was very upset that the Government chose to close its scheme having helped so few.
I have pressured the Immigration Minister to ask the Government once again to reopen the scheme. I have liaised with Lambeth Council, who tell me that they still have more capacity: Lambeth are now housing 36 children and tell me that they have room for seven more. There are many councils across the country who have also indicated that they can take more.
Other measures that the UK is taking to support refugees in camps and elsewhere are important but we must do more to help these children.
